Murphy Horse · How-to guide

How to use Murphy Horse.

Murphy Horse keeps the records behind a barn, from one horse in a backyard paddock to forty event horses across two barns. It tracks who each horse is (barn name, registered name, breed, microchip), where it is and how long it has been out, the farrier, dental and vet work it gets, what it eats, how it is doing, and what it did in the ring. Free, offline, no account.

Do this once

Put Murphy on your Home Screen

Horse runs in your browser, but you do not want to dig up a link in the barn aisle. Add it to your Home Screen once and it opens like any other app, full screen, with its own icon, and it works with no signal once it is there.

On an iPhone or iPad, open app.hey-murphy.com/murphy-horse.html, tap Share (in newer Safari it sits under the ••• button) and choose Add to Home Screen. On Android and desktop Chrome, Murphy offers the install itself when you arrive.

This matters more than it sounds. In a browser tab, the phone can clear a site's data after a week unused. On the Home Screen the records are kept. Murphy shows a red line on Home until you have done it.

How Horse is laid out

Home is the whole barn at a glance.

The gear holds settings, Backup Now, Restore from Backup, your account and the Color choice.

Start here

Adding horses

Tap + Add on the Horses screen. The form opens with barn name first, then breed, with the spelling offered as you type from a list of registry breeds. Whatever you type is kept as typed. The species is already Equus caballus. Registered name and the microchip, brand or lip tattoo sit right below; date of birth, colour and markings, an ID number and more are under More details. The sex menu reads Mare, Stallion or Gelding.

When you save, one short sheet asks for three things your vet will ask for: the Coggins test date, the last vaccination with its next due date, and your vet. Fill what you have and tap Save, or tap Later. Each line you fill becomes an ordinary health record on the horse, and the vet becomes a provider you can pick again. The sheet shows once per horse and never comes back.

A herd is one record with a count, for horses you manage together. Choose A herd on the Add form, give it a count and how sure you are of it, and recount any time. Pull a horse out gives one horse its own record and takes one off the count.

For a full barn, Batch Add Horses takes one line per horse: name, Equus caballus, sex, date of birth. Open each record afterwards for breed, registered name and markings.

Where they are

Stalls, barns and turnout

A stall in Murphy is any place a horse lives or goes: a box stall, a run-in, a paddock, a pasture. Name them as your barn does. Each has its bedding (straw, shavings, pellets, mats and so on), its size, and the equipment and furnishings in it.

Areas group stalls into barns. Tap + Area on the Stalls screen, name it Barn A, and pick the stalls that belong to it. The Stalls list then folds by barn.

There are two kinds of movement, and Murphy keeps them apart:

Give a paddock a turnout limit in hours on its stall form and Today flags any horse that has been out there longer. A stall emptied by a shift and not yet cleaned shows up too.

Condition

Health, medications and the body map

A horse's Health tab is where the vet's work lives. Log Health Observation opens a form whose type list is a horse's: Observation, Vet Exam, Treatment, Deworming, Vaccination, Fecal, Lameness exam, Colic, Coggins test, Surgery, Weight Check, Wound and more.

Medications with a frequency put a checkpoint on Today every dose day, so a missed day is visible. The ON MEDS line on the Health tab lists what is running.

The Body tab is a horse with fourteen zones, each hoof its own. Tap a zone to log a wound there and add a photo per spot; later photos of the same spot sit beside it. Weights are stored as a series, in kilograms or pounds as you choose, and a reminder appears when the last weight has gone stale. Body condition and welfare scores keep their own histories.

On a cadence

Farrier, dental and body work

A horse's Care tab holds the work that comes round on a cycle. Horse starts with trims, shoeing and shoe resets, dental, chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, physical therapy, laser, hydrotherapy, clipping and bathing. Add your own once, say shockwave, and it stays on the list.

Log a care session names the service, the date, the provider (your farrier, dentist, vet or therapist, kept in a list you build) and notes, with photos if you want them. Give a service a cadence in days, say shoeing every 42, and the tab shows when it was last done, when it is next due, and whether it is overdue. Providers stay private: they never appear in anything you export or print for someone else.

Every day

Feeding

Log Feeding on the Feeding tab. Type what you fed as you would say it, "2 flakes hay, 1 scoop grain", and press Enter after each item; the time of day is optional. Supplements start with a horse's list: salt or mineral block, electrolytes, joint supplement, biotin, vitamin E and selenium, probiotic.

Horses are fed every day, so Murphy never calls a feeding due or missed, and a watering is trough care, not a warning. When you log the same feeding on the same days for a few weeks, Murphy notices the routine and offers to make it a Course, so the morning feed loads as one list for the whole barn. Rosters are your feed groups.

Mares and foals

Foalings

The Breeding tab works from the mare. Start a pairing with the stallion, here or elsewhere by name. Log the covering or the artificial insemination, with the other party, the shipment reference, the vet and the doses, then each pregnancy check and its result.

+ New foaling opens the foaling record: the date bred and the gestation you set give a due date, and the due date shows on Today as it nears. Murphy never guesses a gestation for you. When the foal arrives, Record the birth creates the foal as its own horse with both parents on its record, and the pedigree builds from there.

Ring and arena

Training and results

A horse's Training tab starts with its repertoire: what it knows and what it is learning, grouped by discipline. Each session records its method: pressure and release, a bridge with a reinforcer, or a prop. A six-rung Horsemanship ladder, in Murphy's own words from in-hand work to collection and courses, can be applied as a starting repertoire or copied and edited.

The RESULTS section on the same tab keeps what happened at the show. + Result offers a Dressage test, an Eventing result in three phases, a Show class or Other. A dressage sheet is entered movement by movement with the mark, the coefficient and the judge's remark, then the collectives and any errors; the percentage appears once every row is in. Eventing is dressage, cross-country jumping, show jumping jumping and show jumping time as penalty points, with the placing. Murphy never ships a test's text, so you name the test and number the movements.

Dates out and in

Calendar

In My Day → Schedule, Export writes a file for Apple, Google or Outlook. Tick the kinds that go in: schedule events, care sessions and cadences, course runs and medications. Notes, providers and fees go in only if you tick Include private details, which starts unticked every time. Import lists a calendar file's events with none ticked; tick the ones to add. Importing the same file again adds no duplicates.

When you save something with dates, such as a medication course or a care cadence, Murphy offers Add to calendar? Add downloads a file with just that item. Don't ask again turns the offer off, and the export sheet turns it back on.

Keeping your records safe

Everything above is free and lives on your device. Backup Now, under the gear, writes a complete file you can keep anywhere, and Restore from Backup brings it back onto any device.

If you want the records to outlive the phone, or the barn manager's phone and the office computer to hold the same record, open the gear and choose Account to sign in and turn on Keep It Safe. Full-size photos live there too. Syncing is optional and additive: your records keep saving on the device either way.
